What Coverage Does an Electrician Need?

🛡️

General Liability

Covers bodily injury and property damage to third parties — a client, GC, or member of the public — caused by your work or operations. Required on virtually every job.

✅

Completed Operations

Protects you after the job is done. If wiring you installed causes a fire six months later, completed operations coverage responds.

👷

Workers’ Comp

Required when you have employees. Covers medical bills and lost wages for workers injured on the job. Most GCs require it on their site.

📋

Additional Insureds

GCs and property owners will require you to add them to your policy. We handle the endorsements so your COI is accepted the first time.

🔄

Waiver of Subrogation

Required on most Texas commercial and government contracts. Standard GL policies don’t include it automatically — we add it correctly.

🚐

Commercial Auto

Your personal auto policy won’t cover accidents in a vehicle used for work. If you drive to job sites, you need commercial auto coverage.

Electrician-Specific Risk: Completed Operations

Electrical work carries higher completed-operations exposure than most trades. A wiring error can cause fire, shock, or equipment damage long after you’ve left the job. Make sure your GL policy includes adequate completed operations limits — not all online policies are equal here. Our specialists review this for every electrician client.

Common Questions

Do I need to be a licensed electrician to get this insurance?
You don’t need a license to buy insurance, but most carriers want to know your trade classification. In Texas, electrical contractors should hold an appropriate license from TDLR. Some carriers offer better rates to licensed electricians with a clean record.
What limits do I need as an electrician?
Most GCs and commercial projects require $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate for general liability. Some larger projects or government work may require higher limits. Our specialists review contract requirements to make sure your limits match what’s needed.
Can I get covered today for a job starting tomorrow?
Yes — for most standard residential or light commercial electricians with no prior claims. You can bind online and download your COI within minutes. If the job has complex wording requirements, call us and we’ll expedite same-day.
Does GL cover damage caused by my electrical work?
Yes — GL covers property damage to third parties caused by your work, including completed operations. However, it doesn’t cover damage to the work itself (that’s a builder’s risk or inland marine policy). It also won’t cover faulty workmanship that needs to be redone — only resulting damage to other property.
I use subcontractors — does my policy cover them?
Standard GL policies often exclude subcontractor work or require subs to carry their own insurance. If you use subs regularly, let our specialists know — we’ll make sure your policy covers that exposure and that you’re getting the right endorsements.
